Artwork

A section of a compilation of specific categories of artwork.

Whatever the subject matter is, my paintings reflect my fascination with the possibilities of the imagination. Portraits: I’ve always watched people and collecting faces is a pastime of mine. Since childhood I’ve drawn and painted people from my imagination that are constructed from those I see and store away to use when I need them. I can’t always predict what will morph into being, but I know they will intrigue the viewer because they have intrigued me. Themes: Whether it is a novel I have read, or a piece of music I have heard sometimes the ideas are born from a need to see what will come if enough effort and care are applied to an inspiration. Media: Oils, Acrylics,...
Drawing is the back bone of the arts. I have drawn since I was 2, and as all children I interpreted my world with a pencil. However, unlike some I was drawing complete little worlds populated by animals and characters from my imagination to entertain and enthrall others. (Didn’t we all seek approval) As an artist I don’t think I’ve ever grown up. I’m still that child drawing whatever comes into my head. I’ve certainly matured, but I’m still fascinated by the same themes and hopeful that my drawings will still be that window into the workings of my imagination.
I am first and foremost an illustrator. I am not ashamed to say it. I love storytelling. To create a world unto itself is uniquely the realm of the artist whether with the written word or in the visual medium. If I am interpreting another artists’ ideas or creating my own this is all part of the process. I love the art of characterizations and to be able to capture that nuance of feelings in a face or gesture. To layer humor with the macabre or poignancy with sentiment. My illustrations are central to how I think and feel as an artist.
Clip Art has a derogatory connotation that I sometimes agree with. 'Filler art' between text is a necessary evil in today's print world; I hope to somehow add a little depth of feeling to these images, especially in liturgical settings. My work in this regard is thematic; under the myriad of Church year categories and Biblical texts.
What a challenge to distill an idea to just one small image. Of course, large images can be shrunk down to a card size. I do enjoy making little things appropriate to their use. A greeting, a shared thought, thank you, holiday themes; all are distinct opportunities to (as when I was six) to entertain and enthrall people.
Sometimes a piece just seems to speak out as a universal image. My work sometimes lends itself to this medium; and making a poster series seems appropriate to some of my images that might appeal to more than one owner.
My interests in this category have long been a part of my life and artistic output. The Church liturgy and Seasonal themes have guided the arts throughout history. My own work has centered on the life and passion of Christ and Biblical characters and stories. I work in many media styles and have designed work in media carried out by others, like banners and wall hangings. I've made paintings and altarpieces as well as drawings and pastels. I also do illustrations and clip art for many uses.
